EV Battery Recycling with Autonomous Robotic Disassembly

Electric vehicles (EVs) are taking over the automotive industry and as their powerful lithium-ion batteries begin to reach their end of life, the need for efficient recycling solutions for those batteries is becoming more and more critical. In addition to passenger vehicles, EVs are also taking over in commercial and industrial applications, such as delivery trucks, buses, and forklifts as well as motorcycles, marine craft and leisure applications (scooters, bicycles etc).

Open Source Robotics vs Traditional Industrial Automation Pros and Cons

As a robotics integrator, we focus on using machine learning to enhance automation hardware. Our focus on sensor systems for capturing training data and neural networks for imitation learning allows us to enable robots to autonomously perform tasks that are difficult or impossible to automate with traditional methods. This approach is akin to how large language models operate, but instead of predicting the next token, we train robots to predict the next motion given what they see in front of them relative to the training data they have been provided.

Technical Courses, Books, and Tutorials on Robotics

I’ve been keeping a running list of highly recommended and informative resources that I have come across while learning more about robotics. The majority of these resources are free at least to audit, see note at the bottom about Coursera courses. For any resources that are not free - mostly books - I’ve added a (paid) label.

Training Data Collection Methodologies for AI-Driven Robotics

In traditional automation and robotics, the tasks performed by machines must be rigidly prescriptive, structured, and well-defined. Movements are mapped to precise locations, operations are ordered in sequences and a script lists the actions, parameters and repeated processes. This works well for high volume, low mix tasks where there are a small number of variations in possible objects the robot will interact with, but not so well for use cases which do not fit this mold.

Join Us At Portland Area Robotics Society

Join us on Sunday May 5th for a presentation by Rose City Robotics Founder and CEO Joseph Cole, PhD on Mobile ALOHA, the open source robotics hardware developed by Stanford University. The presentation will be given as the main talk for the Portland Area RoboTics Society (P.A.R.T.S) monthly meeting. To register for this free event, please visit the registration page on meetup.com.
